Our Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 students are in a unique stage of their development and require a co-curricular program that is specifically designed to meet their social, emotional and physical developmental needs.

Additionally, at this age and stage we want our youngest girls to be inspired to discover their strengths and passions by being able to experience the range of activities that MLC School has to offer. Our program coordinators and co-curricular staff are experts in their fields and have worked hard to develop these specialised programs to give our youngest students the best possible start to their journey at MLC School.

As a member of the Round Square global network of schools, we are at the forefront of character and values education. Aligning with the School values of Courage, Compassion, Respect and Growth the Round Square Discovery Framework is a tool that assists us to operationalise these values and embed the framework’s character attributes into our programs. The discovery framework allows us to elevate our co-curricular programs beyond just skill development; it fosters in our girls a unique set of characteristics that enables them to reflect on their growth and their place in the world.

Through this program our Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 students will become acquainted with the Round Square Heroes of Discovery. The Heroes of Discovery are a set of 12 culturally diverse superheroes that will assist our co-curricular tutors in teaching our girls the importance of teamwork, being tenacious, compassionate, responsible and much more.

This is what makes the MLC School approach to co-curricular a unique approach.

Dance Program (Pre-K to Year 2)

Dance (Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2)
The Pre-K to Year 2 Dance Program is a developmental experience designed to introduce our youngest students to a variety of dance techniques and genres. Lessons are open and exploratory, allowing students to experience elements of Hip Hop, Jazz and Modern dance while building a foundation for future participation in style-specific disciplines offered in the Year 3 to Year 6 program.

Each session supports early childhood development through movement in a joyful and imaginative environment. The program fosters musicality, characterisation, coordination, spatial and kinaesthetic awareness, creativity and joy. Students engage with themed activities that encourage both fine and gross motor skill development through movement that travels through space and movement performed on the spot.

Dance is presented as an art form, helping students build confidence, curiosity and expressive movement. The focus is on exploration and growth, supporting each child’s physical, social and creative development.

To celebrate their progress, students will have the opportunity to participate in a safe and supportive community performance known as the Twilight Dance Recital, held in Term 4 each year. This event allows students to share their learning and enthusiasm with family and friends in a joyful and inclusive setting.

This program provides a nurturing introduction to dance and prepares students for more structured training in later years.

Lessons are designed to be hands-on and engaging, with plenty of opportunities for children to make choices, try new things, and celebrate their unique ideas. The focus is on the creative process rather than the finished product, helping each child feel proud of their efforts and discoveries. By the end of the program, every child will have a colourful collection of artworks and wonderful memories of making, sharing, and learning together. Physio Play (Pre-K to Year 2)

Physio Play is a small group functional movement program designed by physiotherapists and delivered by at least two trained instructors. It supports children aged 10 months to 10 years in developing essential physical and cognitive skills needed to reach age-appropriate developmental milestones. Delivered in preschools, childcare centres, and schools, the program focuses on building foundational abilities that prepare children for success in everyday life, learning, and sport.

Each weekly session targets three core areas:

  1. Strength and Control: Developing core, pelvic, and shoulder stability enhances postural endurance, enabling children to perform fine motor tasks accurately and maintain focus during cognitive activities. Improved postural strength also supports gross motor skill development.
  2. Processing and Sequencing: Activities promote motor planning, auditory and visual sequencing, and instruction-following. These skills are vital for classroom engagement, sports participation, and daily routines.
  3. Integration and Dominance: Exercises involving both sides of the body and midline crossing help integrate brain function, refine movement coordination, and establish a dominant side – critical for literacy and numeracy development.

Physio Play offers a holistic, evidence-based approach to movement and learning, ensuring children build the physical and cognitive foundations necessary for lifelong success.

Speech and Drama Program (Pre-K to Year 2)

In our Speech and Drama program students build foundational communication and performance skills through play, storytelling, and creative expression while developing values that reflect the Round Square philosophy.

Students explore voice, movement, and imagination to gain confidence in speaking clearly and expressively. Through role-play, group activities, and dramatic storytelling, they learn to listen actively, take turns, and collaborate, introducing them to the principles of Democracy and Leadership in age-appropriate ways.

Themes from around the world foster Internationalism, helping children understand and respect different cultures and perspectives. Environmental-themed stories and characters encourage a sense of Environmentalism, sparking early awareness and care for the world around them.

Our classes include games that challenge imagination and build resilience, embracing Adventure in a safe and supportive space. Children are also encouraged to take small roles of responsibility, fostering early experiences of Service and empathy. By nurturing creativity alongside character, our program supports young learners not only in becoming confident speakers and performers, but also in developing into thoughtful, compassionate global citizens.
