Saturdays see the MLC community out in force to cheer on our finalists and to wrap-up and say thank you for the season.

Sport is an integral part of the MLC School life and plays and important part in the development of the "whole person". MLC has a proud sporting tradition and we applaud those who give it a go as much as those who excel. Sport also helps the girls develop many qualities they can rely on now, and in later life such as teamwork, leadership and fair play.

Girls from all age groups are strongly encouraged to participate in the wide variety of sports offered. Year 7 have a compulsory involvement in sport and must play two terms of either a Saturday Competition Sport or another sport offered after school during the week.

Inter-House Sport

An important part of the tradition and culture of MLC is the Inter-House competitions. Girls represent their House as they strive for Championship and representative honours in the sports of

MLC has had some impressive performances at Inter-School Competitions.

Firstly, in an outstanding performance by MLC Swimming Team. Five years ago we placed 17th, however in recent years we have maintained a top 4 ranking.

The future is looking particularly bright for MLC swimming with some remarkable talent in the junior years.

With so many talented athletes and not enough races, many courageous and unselfish MLC swimmers compete consistently in high age groups to get MLC the maximum points. That is the spirit that makes swimming at MLC such a fantastic team sport in which to be involved.

The consolidation of the swimming team performance has been the result of access to on-site state-of-the-art facilities in the MLC Aquatic Centre and the depth of experience in the MLC coaching staff under Head Coach Mr John Bladon.

MLC is also moving up the tennis rankings with an outstanding overall 5th place in the 2008 Tildesley Shield. For the second year in a row, MLC players contested the coveted single crown and this year saw our No. 1 doubles combination contest the doubles final. This was in addition our Tennis Firsts winning the Saturday morning IGSSA Tennis Premiership for the top division.

Under the guidance of MLC coaches, Mr Ross Anton and Mr Ludevic Catherine the improvement is very evident as is the strong camaraderie and team spirit of the MLC tennis players.

Sport is Social and unites us as a School

One of our highlights every term is Grand Finals Day. At the end of each season MLC Awards its Best and Fairest and Most Improved in every team. These Saturdays see the MLC community out in force to cheer on our finalists and to wrap-up and say thank you for the season . Our Year 12 Sports Committee works hard to make the day enjoyable and fun for all our families.

Congratulations to….

Swimming Caitlin Sinclair, Melanie Tan, Suay Toprak
Diving Genevieve de la Motte, Lily Frame
Athletics Caitlyn Gough, Anna Laman, Kristy Dingwall, Bronwen Greenfield, Ashleigh Parr

who will be completing at the Pacific School Games to be held in Canberra from 30 November. The Pacific School Games (PSG) is an international sporting event for primary and secondary students aged 10 - 19 years. We wish them well

Emma Sprouster (who is an outstanding cyclist who has clocked up thousands of kilometres and some very impressive results this year. She was placed first in the Goulburn Tour, gained two road race stage wins in the Tamworth Tour and a fourth place at the Canberra Tour Criterium, an international event. She has been a state representative in 2007 and is placed second in the state currently, while awaiting team selection. And what did Emma spend the rest of last month doing when she wasn’t on the bike? “Watching the Tour de France of course,” she admits as she prefers the road racing to track. Emma will also be watching the Beijing Olympics with keen interest and plenty of dreams for her own future in the sport.

Kate McPherson (Year 10) has been having a wonderful soccer season this year. Kate was selected into the IGSSA Representative Girls Soccer Team that won the tournament at Parklea. This led to Kate’s selection to the CIS Team and games against Combined High Schools and Combined Catholic Colleges. Kate plays right back “or really anywhere in defence”. Her interest in soccer comes from her dad and cousin. “It was either soccer or karate,” she explained but felt her fingers were safer in soccer. Kate plays for North Western Sydney and has just been chosen again in a Representative Team - Metropolitan East. She is off to Dubbo for a tournament where scouts will be looking for players for state selection. Good luck Kate.

Jackie Crawford (Year 10) is no stranger to the netball courts at MLC. Jackie has played in our 1sts netball team for many years and was chosen this year in the IGSSA team. IGSSA dominates the division and Jackie has since been chosen for CIS. Jackie plays centre and wing attack .Selection for the Netball All Schools Team will be on 28 September.

Jackie also plays touch football and was selected as a shadow player for IGSSA. Luck came her way when one player was unable to compete. Jackie filled in so successfully she once again found herself selected for the CIS team. She will play in the All School’s Competition after a training camp.

As her commitments for Netball and Touch Football are running concurrently she is very fit and we wish her the best of luck.
