The House System

Every girl in MLC School belongs to a House.

Each girl is known in depth and encouraged along a positive path to achieve her potential.

All girls at MLC belong to a House. House is a way of belonging
to a smaller community within the larger School community so that girls are known personally within their House. House also provides grouping for the delivery of Pastoral Care Programs and encourages girls to work together to build social and emotional resilience.

The Houses in Junior School

In Kent House the Houses are Mooramoora Leawarra Churunga and Booralee. Here the House System provides a group to belong to, to build spirit and unity through inter-house competition and responsibility. House Debating and House Charity initiatives, House responsibilities and duties, as well as the competition for points during the year at the Athletics, Cross Country and Swimming carnivals are tallied to decide the winner of the Kent House Cup each year on Speech Day.

The Houses in the Senior School

The Houses in the Senior school expand to ten. Each House has a Head of House and House Tutors. Like Kent House inter-house competition is a part of every year as Houses vie for Honours in Debating, Chess, Literature, Athletics Cross-Country and Swimming to take out the Spirit and Points Trophies on Speech Night.

In the Senior School (Years 9-12) the backbone of the Pastoral Care Program is the House System. The primary responsibility of the Head of House and House Tutors is to ensure that each girl is known in depth and encouraged along a positive path to achieve her potential.

Vertical House Time involves students in Years 10, 11 and 12 meeting regularly to provide support for each other and to generate ideas about common issues such as developing leadership skills, working collaboratively, respecting individual differences, building resilience and dealing with disappointment. Senior students have particular needs that can best be met by working together and sharing experiences. Three vertical groups per House meet each morning for roll call and on Tuesday during House Time. The ten Houses ensure small tutor groups. The tutor's role is to develop an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect and to act as each girl's friend and advisor.
