Careers Counselling

"What do you want to do when you leave school?"

It is probably the most commonly asked question of teenagers fast approaching their final school years and exams and yet, with so many career and course options available, the choices become more and more difficult to make. Most importantly the final decision must be a well informed one. Secondly, she knows from experience that it is very important to understand there are more and more diverse pathways to achieving career goals.

The Careers Counsellors work primarily in the Senior School providing up-to-date and accurate information on post school course and career selection. Some of the Careers services include:

  • Careers education program for all Year 10 students
  • work experience program for Year 10 students
  • Careers and Educational testing program for all Year 10 students which feeds into the Subject Selection Program and three-way conference involving parents and student
  • individual careers counselling for all senior school students, preparing them for the transition from school to post-school options
  • workshops for senior students to assist them in applying for special programs such as Medicine, Cadetships or tertiary scholarships
  • provision of up-to-date information and advise from tertiary providers at the Inner west Careers and tertiary Expo which is hosted by MLC School annually
  • Careers forums, focusing on career paths of former students, which is an annual event
  • Careers Awareness Days for Year 11 students focusing on motivation and goal setting for Year 12
  • Careers ‘Blue Sheet’ which updates career information, seminars, open days and courses on a daily basis,
    and emailing students directly.

Careers Interviews

Every Year 12 girl is interviewed individually during her final year to assist her in making the right career choices. Students seeking University Scholarships are also supported by the Careers Counsellor throughout the application and interview process.

Inner West Tertiary Expo

The Inner West Tertiary Study and Careers Expo

The Inner West Tertiary Study and Careers Expo is hosted and jointly coordinated by MLC School 's Careers Counsellor and is one of the largest held in Sydney . With over 70 different Tertiary and Career organisations represented, the Expo offers nearly 3000 students from the Inner West the opportunity to access representatives from all the universities in NSW, some interstate ones and Otago in NZ; TAFE institutions; private training organizations such as Billy Blue Designs; businesses offering traineeships and apprenticeships such as Coles Myer; employment networks; employment association groups; and overseas GAP and exchange program organisers.

Guest speakers from TAFE and University Experience are part of Careers advice

On this evening panels of career women are assembled in 'career interest areas' to talk about the pathways they have taken to their careers. All the panellists are drawn from the MLC Alumni network and current parents. Listening to the way others have achieved their goals is not only informative but is also inspirational . The panels of 3-4 women represent different occupations within each industry area. Some panels from the past have included:

  • Psychology, Social Work, Family Law and Habilitation
  • Advertising, Marketing, HR and Accounting
  • Journalism, Television Production, Radio Announcing, Public Relations
  • Health Science, Forensic Science, Engineering and Quantity Surveying
  • Hospitality Careers and Events Management
  • Actuarial, Finance and Banking, Company and Corporate Law, Accountancy
  • Medical Research, Medical Practice, Physiotherapy, Dietetics

 

Assistance with Vocational Education and Training

In another capacity the Careers Counsellor is also the Coordinator for students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training Courses, overseeing their work placement and accreditation.
