MLC School Foundation Membership

The aim of the MLC School Foundation is to support and assist the School Council by encouraging and fostering the interest and the financial support of the MLC School Family. Membership of Foundation is at several levels and includes very valuable contributions from past students, parents of current and past students, benefactors and friends of the School.

Membership of the Foundation starts from with a gift of $2,000 with pledged payments spread across a four year period to provide added financial flexibility for donors. All donations to the Foundation are gratefully received and acknowledged to the MLC School Family. Donations to the Building and Library Fund are tax deductible and a receipt will be sent for taxation purposes.

Daphne Line enrolled at Methodist Ladies College, in 1938 and completed her Leaving Certificate in 1943. Her Valete entry in Excelsior, was testimony to her remarkable academic, sporting and leadership roles.

Daphne died in April last year after a long and distinguished career as a specialist physician with membership to both the Edinburgh and London Royal Colleges of Physicians. While living in the UK she chose to return to Sydney each year, maintaining contact with MLC through her sister Shirley's family, who continued the generational connection with the school. She was always an enthusiastic attendee at the MLC 'London Reunions', meeting Mrs Stone on many occasions.

This year we learned that Dr Line's had made provision for a most generous bequest to MLC School. This gesture culminates a life filled with a love of learning; recognition for the education she received as a young woman that led her on a journey of remarkable service and academic excellence.

The MLC School Foundation Bequest Program

Leaving a bequest to MLC gives you the satisfaction of knowing you have helped ensure the School's future and that 'all we have consecrated will live on'.

Some benefactors have bequeathed scholarships in their names that give the donor the satisfaction of experiencing resultant changes in education while they are still living. Such a bequest can offer a student the opportunity to study at MLC that they may not have otherwise enjoyed. In addition, all academic scholarships raise the overall educational standard of the School. Please discuss your intentions with the School before you finalise legal or financial arrangements.

While some donors choose to give a bequest anonymously, the School would appreciate talking with you about how your gift will benefit the School. Your plans will be kept completely private and confidential. View the MLC School Foundation Bequest Program Brochure.

Capital Works

MLC School has engaged expert planners and architects, including internationally renowned and awarding winning architect Mr Ed Lippman of Lippman Associates, to create a Master Plan for our School. This Master Plan identifies how we need to change our School buildings so that we can continue to offer our students the contemporary learning environment that they need to succeed.

The Master Plan also identifies how we can improve the traffic flow around our School to enhance the safety of the girls and reduce the conjestion for our neighbours and the wider community.

The next stage of the Master Plan - A new Junior School for Pre Kinder to Year 5

There is huge excitement at MLC School Burwood with the building of their new Junior School to be ready for the start of the 2009 school year.

Two factors, are key to meeting our expectations for 21st century learners – tailoring learning to individual needs and the integration of computer technology – are difficult to achieve in traditional classrooms.” For this reason latest learning theory underpins the architecture of the new school, creating flexible, well proportioned, stimulating learning spaces with functional interaction between adjoining rooms.

The necessity of a site change to give greater learning and play space for the Junior School gave award winning Sydney architect, Ed Lippmann, a blank canvas to interpret Transforming Learning, MLC School’s philosophy for learning in the 21st century. The inspired design utilizes the relationships between space, materials, colour and light to create wonderful learning ‘places’ which encourage children to develop their senses as well as their intellect and creativity.

“Ed Lippmann understands what it is to create successful learning spaces and to provide a welcoming place for our community,” said Head of MLC Junior School, Mrs Diana Drummond, who has worked very closely with Mrs Stone and the architect throughout the project. MLC’s new Junior School provides a blueprint for schools of the future.

The Aquatic Centre

The MLC School Aquatic Centre was opened on 11 April 2003 by Ms Dawn Fraser AO and was attended by former student and MLC's most famous Olympian, Lorraine Crapp.

The MLC School Foundation was delighted to make a significant contribution to enable its construction in order to achieve the following benefits for current and future MLC girls:

  • expansion of students' physical education
  • availability of a comprehensive, year round learn to swim program
  • coaching and training which will generate competitive advantage in all water sports
  • increased demand for swimming, diving, water polo classes
  • provision for scuba diving classes

The Foundation's Buy-A-Tile Program was very popular with the girls and their families and the major pool items such as lanes and diving boards sold to the schools Association and consortiums of Families who banded together. All these generous donors are recognised on the Foundation Boards in the Aquatic Centre.

Fundraising initiatives

The MLC Parents and Friends’ Association and The MLC School Foundation joined together in the organisation of the MLC School Dinner Dance held this year at Waterview Convention Centre, Bicentennial Park. Our guest MC for the evening, Mr Simon Reeve of the 7 Network’s Sunrise Program, introduced the MLC School Stage Band with their bracket of big band jazz favourites under the baton of Mr Chris Hayles. As fundraising was the aim of the night, the silent auction and raffles supported the school’s current building projects, in particular the new MLC Junior School.
