Sandra Bates AM (Ross '55)
MLC's 'Woman of Distinction 2005
“I want them to have peaks to climb. I want to go on that journey with them, to laugh and to cry.”
From her days as a three year old, desperate to join the ‘big girls’ and start Kindergarten at MLC, Sandra Bates (Ross ’55) has indeed been on a truly remarkable journey. After leaving MLC School in 1955, Sandra originally trained as a speech and drama teacher, completed a Pharmacy degree and then decided to begin acting classes after having four children. In 1986, Sandra Bates was invited to take over the position of Artistic and Governing
Director of the Ensemble Theatre by its founder Hayes Gordon on his retirement. In 2006 she will have held this position for 20 years. During this time Sandra re-introduced subscription seasons to the theatre and under her artistic direction the theatre is now in profit with no government funding and has over 12000 subscribers.
Sandra actively encourages Australian content at the theatre and each year produces at least two Australian productions that are often world premieres. Sandra was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2001.
In October this year, at the University and Schools Club in Sydney, members of the MLC community including those from Sandra’s cohort year, gathered to honour her extraordinary achievements as the 2005 Woman of
Distinction. In her address, Sandra concluded by emphasising the one aspect of her journey which has remained
consistent: that of true friendships made and nurtured at school, those links which last a lifetime.
