The Chapel

The Chapel at MLC is a refurbishment of the Boarders' Dining Room after a fire in 1977 destroyed the majority of the boarding house located in the original building on the corner of Park Road and Rowley Streets. The dining room was salvaged as a one-storey building and converted into a school Chapel. The beautiful stained glass windows are the commissioned work of former student Alison Brown '78.

Every House in the School attends their House Chapel Service here on Sundays throughout the year and Year group Chapel is celebrated here during the week. It is a lovely welcoming place for individual quiet reflection and is also a place where the girls can gather with friends and the Chaplains at times when they need special support.

The Community of MLC School reaches throughout history and geography to include the current students of the School and their families, ex-students, and the staff of the School. The Chaplains are here to extend pastoral care and support to those of our community during their special times of celebration and to mark significant moments of loss and grief.

  • Weddings
The MLC School Chapel is available for Weddings to be celebrated in the tradition of the Uniting Church of Australiafor members of the MLC School Community. The Chaplains are experienced at arranging creative and beautiful ceremonies. The beautiful stained glass windows of the Chapel highlight the sanctity of these occasions. Marriage Preparation courses are arranged through the ELM Centre’s “To Have and to Hold” program (http://elm.org.au/) and the Chaplains can provide marriage preparation counselling. The Chapel is not usually available for weddings during school holidays or on long weekends. Contact the Chaplains to enquire about booking the Chapel for your wedding date.
  • Baptisms
Old Girls of MLC School regularly make contact with the school to arrange for the baptism of their child. Baptism is a very special sacrament of the world wide Christian Church; a public ceremony of initiation which takes place during the normal worship time of a community. The foundational document for the Uniting Church, The Basis of Union, affirms: “The Uniting Church will baptise those who confess the Christian faith, and children who are presented for baptism and for whose instruction and nourishment in the faith the Church takes responsibility.” Baptisms at MLC School take place during or immediately following a Sunday house service attended by students and families of the School. Representatives from the baptismal candidate’s local congregation attend the service to welcome this new member of the church. The dates available for services of baptism are set for each year, and are available from the Chaplains.
  • Funerals
The Chaplains are available for the pastoral care and support for members of our community dealing with the sudden decline in health or death of a relative or close friend. This support can range from gentle conversations, hospital or home visitations, bereavement counselling for students, leading the funeral, and the use of the Chapel for memorial services.

The Sutherland Rooms

The Sutherland Rooms are the former living and dining rooms of the original Principal's Residence on the ground floor of the Schofield Tower. They have been refurbished recently to provide formal meeting rooms for the School. Photographic portraits of all the Heads and Principals of MLC line the walls of one of the rooms, and informal scenes from college life from the late 1800s to the 1930s are the feature of the photographs in the other. Parents gather here after welcome chapel services, the MLC Auxiliary meet here, and some reunion groups are also able to gather here and on the Principal's Lawn.
