The MLC Aquatic Centre

Ms Dawn Fraser AO opened the MLC Aquatic Centre on the 11 April 2003. In an emotional and exciting ceremony Dawn Fraser was reunited with Lorraine Crapp, former MLC student from the Year of '55, her teammate from both the 1956 Olympic Games. Current Australian Olympic Team member and MLC former student Felicity Galvez set the pool record for 200metre butterfly in much the same way as Lorraine had done in 1957 at the opening of the first MLC School pool. The whole School was poolside to witness history in the making.

The 6x 50metre and 2 x 33metre (i.e. 8 lane) indoor heated swimming pool incorporates a learn to swim area, an international water polo field and has both 1 and 3metre diving boards. The diatomaceous filtration system ensures crystal clear water at all times.

The centre was design by one of Australia's most awarded architects, Ed Lippman

For Lippman, "good architectural design is to do with the minimisation of the superfluous - the streamlining of form and structure". Its beauty is in its low-line roof structure which nestles against the trees at the south-eastern end of the MLC Campus with a back drop of trees on the perimeter of Burwood Park.

The centre has been designed with cantilevered glass doors down the entire north wall to provide and indoor-outdoor feel with natural ventilation in summer while in winter ensuring a constant warm air temperature with ventilation through the roof. A mezzanine deck allows viewing over the entire complex, with a sun deck off the pool deck on the lower level. All of this innovation with light and air ensures energy and cost savings.

The amenities area provides toilets, security lockers, and warm showers with large cubicle dressing area, hair dryers and mirrors.

For architect Ed Lippman, "good architectural design is to do with the minimisation of the superfluous – the streamlining of form and structure".

The centre caters for all of MLC School 's internal aquatic sports programs such as learn to swim and squad training programs, diving, water polo and life saving training. During lunchtime the girls are free to lap swim if the pool is not in use for training. MLC parents have reduced rate access during the evenings and on weekends for private lap swimming.

The MLC Aquatic Centre provides comprehensive external Learn to Swim and Swimming Squad Programs and is the home of the MLC Marlins Swimming Club that operates outside of school hours.

Fitness Programs such as Pilates, Yoga and Aerobics are also available in our Cardio and Gym Rooms. Members of the wider community are very welcome to join any or all of our programs.
