The Structure

The Independent Leaning Centre (ILC) was opened in 1998 by the then Governor General of Australia Sir William Dean. It stands as the physical centre for the Information Technology and Network Communications for the whole school. It is a four-storey building of glass and aluminium with internal working spaces that are naturally lit and views out across the school.

The Function

As its name implies its function is to facilitate independent learning tools, such as IT, and independent learning strategies so that MLC girls can take an active, creative and responsible role in their learning through quick and easy access to information at any time, whether in the ILC, in the school, at home, or anywhere in the world through the network that connects them to their teachers and the intranet.

The ILC has an ongoing commitment to the development and improvement of flexible learning systems that incorporate technological advances. The building was designed to be architecturally flexible both internally and externally, so as to be able to accommodate change, acknowledging as a certainty, that technology brings with it rapid change in the ways in which we access and use information for learning.

The ground, 1st and 2nd floors have large open plan areas for class work with smaller seminar rooms or specialist computer laboratories, off these areas, to accommodate smaller group work and classes, including computer labs for high end software application training.
