Scholarships at MLC

MLC School offers a number of Scholarships to students who submit scholarship applications in the calendar year prior to their entry to Year 7. These scholarships may cover full or part remission of tuition fees for a student from the beginning of Year 7 to the completion of Year 12. In the allocation of scholarships no distinction is made between students entering MLC at Year 7 and those continuing at MLC from Year 6.

Having an "all-rounder" Approach

Scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated the ability to make a significant contribution to the School in at least three (3) of the following areas; these may include outstanding academic ability; creative and performing arts, debating, public speaking, leadership, or sport and who will benefit from the school's academic and pastoral care programs. Our School philosophy of valuing and nurturing the whole person is very much a part of our scholarship program which does not aim to have a narrowly academic focus.

The Selection Process

The selection process uses a variety of criteria including results of the ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) Co-operative Scholarship Testing Program (CSTP), presentation of a portfolio of achievements and interests designed and created by the student herself and an interview. The final selection for all scholarship recipients is determined by these criteria.

Music Scholarships

The music program at MLC School is designed to offer music students every opportunity to develop the necessary skills for tertiary music study or to be a successful practising musician for life.

An integrated approach to performing, listening, aural skills and composition is necessary to enable a student to reach their full potential.

Criteria for Selection

  • Music Scholarships are offered to Year 6 students who are exceptional musicians on their chosen instrument.
  • Scholarship recipients will participate in the full music program offered by MLC School, throughout their time at MLC.
  • Music Scholarship recipients will also demonstrate an “all-rounder” approach to school life.

This commitment, as a serious and dedicated musician, requires full participation in the elective music program from Years 9 -12. This is an integrated course of individual performance, ensemble performance, study of musicology, aural development and composition.

Music Scholarship recipients will also participate in the core music ensembles depending on their instrument and will be expected to be in the advanced ensembles involving their instrument. As a result they will be committed to all required music performances throughout the year.

For example:

  • A string player will participate in orchestra as a core ensemble and chamber orchestra as an advanced ensemble. A chamber music ensemble position will be allocated according to the musical standard of the student.
  • A wind and brass player will participate in concert band as a core ensemble and orchestra when the position arises. A chamber music ensembles position will be allocated according to the musical standard of the student.

Please download the Music Scholarship Application Form print, complete and return to the Admissions Office of MLC School.

This Scholarship is awarded by the Old Girls' Union using the ACER Co-operative Scholarship Testing Program results. A separate application form is required for this Scholarship. Please download the Edna Curtis Scholarship Application Form, print, complete and return to the Admissions Office of MLC School.

ACER Test Results, Interviews and Scholarship Offers

ACER produces the tests, supplies them to schools, marks the test papers and reports the results to schools. ACER test results are made available to all schools on the same day throughout Australia for all candidates.

Each student will receive an individual candidate report, compiled by ACER, but sent from MLC School via postmail. NO TEST RESULTS WILL BE GIVEN OVER THE PHONE. This report outlines the student's results in each of the tests. ACER does NOT report test results directly to candidates.

MLC School offers scholarships based on our registered candidate list. Suitable candidates for Scholarship consideration at MLC School will be contacted by telephone and will also receive a letter inviting them to attend an interview at MLC School to discuss the possibility of a part or full Scholarship offer. The offer of a Scholarship will only be made after an interview has taken place.
