At the inaugural awards, MLC students won both junior film-maker categories

The inaugural Robin Anderson Film Awards Festival in 2003 was the result of the generous donations from friends, family, members of the film industry and the public that flooded in to MLC School at the time of Robin Anderson's death in 2002. MLC School is the custodian of the Robin Anderson Fund as Robin and Bob Connolly's two daughters attend MLC.

Instead of a memorial scholarship in Robin's memory, MLC decided in favour of an annual competitive film festival for students. The decision was founded in the belief that Robin would have wanted to be a part of an initiative that promoted and encouraged young filmmakers and offered them industry based assistance and prizes.

The Robin Anderson Film Awards Festival has attracted the sponsorship and support of Film Australia, The Australian Film, Radio and Television School (AFTRS), ABC Television, Sony, State Theatre, College of Fine Arts, Sydney Film School, Animal Logic, PowerMedia and Art Business.

In 2003 nine schools entered over thirty films in the first competition and the films nominated for awards were screened at a packed Valhalla Cinema on the 14 November, 2003. Mr Dick Smith presented the Robin Anderson Trophy for the Best Film to Tim Doldissen of Ashfield Boy's High School for his film Just Another.

In 2006, the Robin Anderson Film Awards wentnational!
