The NSW School Certificate

The School Certificate is awarded by the Board of Studies NSW to eligible students at the end of Year 10.

To receive the School Certificate, Years 9 and 10 students study the core curriculum comprising of English, Mathematics, Science, Religion, Australian History, Australian Geography, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education, a Language other than English and Music.

In Year 9 three electives are chosen from Commerce, Design and Technology, Dance, Drama, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Latin, Information and Software Technology, Photographic and Digital Media, Physical Activity and Sport Studies, Food Technology, Visual Arts, Textiles and Design or Music.

In Year 10 students continue with two of these electives. One elective must be a Language other than English.

Class groups in core areas, including English, Mathematics and Science, are organised on the basis of demonstrated ability and performance. A range of measures are used to identify gifted and talented students and group them accordingly. Similarly students with learning support needs are identified and strategies put in place to assist them. There are high ability classes and a series of
parrallel classes.

Each year all students in Year 10 sit the statewide tests in November in English-literacy, Mathematics, Science (and Australian History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship).  MLC also sits the Computing Examination.
